Urban units

The division of the territory of  Sofia Municipality into urban units creates an appropriate “pixel” size as an auxiliary planning tool in order to aggregate statistics and to derive estimates of basic parameters of future development within these limits. Their boundaries are not defined by law or regulation, and in this sense they are informal. They are defined as territorial units used for planning purposes and approximate the territories of existing neighborhoods or areas according to ownership deeds. Their size must be small enough to include sections with relatively homogeneous urban land use and designation characteristics and large enough to be able to provide reliable forecasting.

Defining boundaries also entails some imperfections and compromises. The main purpose underpinning the final framework of urban units of Sofia Municipality is ensuring they act as an auxiliary tool for detailed territorial analysis, forecasting and planning. (see the map in full size)
